Then visit the Accademia Gallery, home to Michelangelo's David, an enduring symbol of human strength and beauty, carved from a single block of marble and moved here from Piazza della Signoria in 1873 to protect it from the elements. Admire its intricate details up close, then look for the gallery's most moving lesson in how genius works: Michelangelo's unfinished Prisoners, their figures still half-trapped in the stone.
