551 steps to the best view in Rome
Then it's time for the highlight: the Dome climb. An elevator carries you partway up to the terrace level (skipping about 231 steps); from there you continue on foot up roughly 320 narrow, winding steps that squeeze between the dome's inner and outer shells, around 551 steps in all. The reward is a spectacular 360° view over Vatican City and all of Rome, with the Tiber snaking toward the horizon. It's the photograph everyone goes home talking about.
Good to know
The 3-hour tour includes priority entrance, a licensed expert guide, headsets, the elevator to the Dome terrace, and access to the papal tombs and the basilica's highlights. The final stretch of the climb is on foot through tight spiral staircases, so a good level of fitness is recommended. The basilica's dress code applies, knees and shoulders covered, no shorts, sleeveless tops or short skirts, and strollers, backpacks and flash photography aren't allowed inside. Security screening can take up to 45 minutes in high season even with priority entry. Not suitable for children under 6, visitors with mobility impairments, or wheelchair users.

- Your guide accompanies you through St. Peter's Basilica but does not climb the Dome, the Dome ascent is self-guided.
- Total climb is approx. 551 steps. The elevator covers the first part (to the terrace), but the remaining 320 steps to the summit must be climbed on foot through tight, spiral staircases. A good level of fitness is recommended. Shorts, sleeveless tops, and short skirts are not permitted inside the Basilica; knees and shoulders must be covered. Strollers, backpacks, and flash photography are not allowed inside. Even with priority entry, security screening can take up to 45 minutes during high season. The activity is not suitable for children under 6, visitors with mobility impairments, or wheelchair users.
